Has the Profession merely accepted its shortcomings in the key areas of Leadership, Marketing, and Business Administration? Or does the opportunity exist for Accountants to become better Leaders?
Accountants have never been taught to lead, nor is the profession known for producing inspiring leaders. Your professional qualification processes do not provide any leadership training and worse yet, we estimate less than 10% of Accountants have attended any form of Best Practice Leadership Development training by the age of 40.
Leadership is not in the playbook and thousands of Accounting Principles struggle to maintain a healthy work-life balance to personal income ratio.
MOST COMMON COMPLAINTS
The complaints most commonly made by Accountants are in the areas of:
- Work-Life Balance
- Cash Flow
- Employee Quality, Accountability & Retention
- Being Pigeon Holed By Clients as Compliance Only
The big issue here is a lack of awareness from Accountants that Leadership is the key to addressing all of these items #1-5 above.
CAN A LEOPARD CHANGE ITS SPOTS?
Ok so you would love to address these common complaints (#1-5 above) and you’re even open-minded to the concept that Leadership may be the missing link. If so then the key question is can a leopard change its spots?
The good news is that even really poor leaders can learn some basic tools and techniques that can lead to transformational outcomes within their Practices.
There has been some amazing research done recently where Jack Zenger (the world authority on leadership, and my ex-boss) has gone into Primary Schools in the USA and taught 7-10-year-olds the principles of leadership and these kids have demonstrated basic competencies within a few hours!
TOOLS, TECHNIQUES AND SYSTEMS ARE THE KEY
If we ask a leopard to become a lion the leopard has no chance. So promising a non-inspiring leader that they can be truly transformed is not necessarily realistic either.
However, the same person offered practical tools and techniques backed up by world’s best practice business systems can, in fact, transform the culture and environment of their business into a high-performance workplace in a relatively short time frame (i.e. less than 6 months).
WILL THIS REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Yes it can. In fact, we have seen poor leaders transform into competent, self-assured business owners (yes Accountants taking action) in time frames as short as 90 days. It can take longer for one’s self-belief system to evolve into the true leader, however, the reason Accounting Principles are able to achieve so much so quickly is through a structured support program which is like joining the dots.
HOW TO GET STARTED
Getting into a structured leadership development program specifically for Accountants is going to provide the most support. Having worked for arguably the world’s leading authority in Corporate Leadership, I’m proud of the leadership program we have put together for Accountants which now runs Australia wide (www.bestpracticeprogram.com.au)
