The business model was etched in my mind. I was desperate to recreate a large team generating heaps of cash every month just like I had created when employed as John Robertson’s CEO. I could not wait to make it happen so I started taking shortcuts from the day I went out on my own.

Years later I had twice built large cash creating a business but lost around one million dollars on two separate occasions. The ripple effect of those financial losses proved to be devastating to my family and even threatened my marriage. And although those dark years are behind me now, full financial recovery took almost five years.

UNTIL YOU HAVE LOST IT ALL YOUR BELIEFS ARE ONLY THEORIES

Once you have lost a million dollars or more in business, you have a fundamentally different belief system for theories and concepts are great but only experience qualifies as experience.

When you can’t get any money from the bank, can’t source an investor, and don’t have regular cash flow to rely on life can be pretty grim. Out of despair came my greatest lessons.

My years as an employee were working in exceptional environments for exceptional business people and I suddenly realized what needed to be done.

It was time to slow down and better define what my business model would look like and start patiently looking for insights into how to ensure my business would become bullet proof. Additionally I knew I had to create a smart business that made money whether I was at work or not (beach money).

Despite the years of non-financial return in the recovery and rebuilding phase, for the very first time I completely understood why I had not achieved on my own what I had achieved working for others beforehand.

The knowing was incredible. I suddenly knew what to do and how to do it. I had no doubts whatsoever that I would “make it”.

YOU CAN HAVE EVERYTHING YOU WANT IF YOU JUST HELP ENOUGH PEOPLE GET WHAT THEY WANT – ZIG ZIGLAR

I had all the skills knowledge and expertise that I needed. Why I ignored my calling for so long and just chased the money I could not explain! I guess it came down to the learning curve and maturity model I have shared with you in this book and that I too as a business owner had to “grow up”.

Not only would I now go and achieve this but even more importantly there was a bright light of clarity burning at the end of a long dark tunnel and so I went back to my roots and started assisting as many other people as possible to become more successful in their businesses and stopped focusing on what was in it for me. Years later I now call this the “R & D Phase” (the research and development phase).

THE ULTIMATE BUSINESS – THE R & D PHASE

With a clear head and good intentions I started drafting a business concept unlike any I had seen. I wanted to help people to buy, improve and sell their businesses.
